Beatbush Organic Farm
The Poultry Flock

2004 saw the start of poultry production at Brook Hall Farm. Day old Legarth geese arrived in May followed by Bronze turkeys in June.

The geese spent 2 weeks inside under heat lamps that were gradually raised as they grew stronger. They then moved to a portable house in a clover rich pasture. The house was virtually unused all summer and the organic wheat apparently does not taste anything like as good as the clover.

The turkeys spent slightly longer in the heated building as they take slightly longer to feather and harden up. When they were ready we moved them to a barn where they have access to a paddock during the day and are shut up at night. The turkeys are fed a bought in organic poultry ration that meets the strict organic standards.

Organic Farmers and Growers inspected the poultry operation in November and have given it their seal of approval. 2005 will see the start of a table chicken production at Brook Hall Farm.
